Traverse Erg Chebbi’s sand dunes on camelback and spend nights in a Merzouga Desert camp. Encounter the playful Barbary Apes in the Middle Atlas Mountains before reaching Fes, where you’ll witness the country’s vibrant cultural tapestry and breathtaking landscapes.
Your adventure on the Marrakech to Fes desert excursion commences at 08:00 AM, setting off from your hotel or riad. The journey kicks off with a traverse through the majestic High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi N’Tichka pass, standing tall at 2260m. Revel in the picturesque landscapes as you pass by charming Berber villages crafted from mud-brick and witness shepherds tending to their flocks amidst lush green plateaus, with snow-capped peaks decorating the distant horizon. Multiple pit stops will be made en route for photo opportunities, short strolls, and a refreshing cup of coffee. By midday, you will reach the UNESCO world heritage site of Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a renowned location that has graced the screens of blockbuster movies like Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones. Following a guided tour of this mud-brick village, the journey continues towards Ouarzazate, famously dubbed as the Hollywood of Africa due to its prominent film studios. Post a leisurely lunch, you will explore the Skoura oasis and visit the immaculately preserved Kasbah of Amridil, considered one of Morocco's finest. Subsequently, the route leads to Kalaa Mgouna through the enchanting Valley of the Roses, culminating in an evening at a charming boutique guest house in the Dades Valley for a delightful dinner and overnight stay.
Commencing the second day of your journey from Marrakech to Fes through the Sahara desert, you will embark on a scenic drive along the renowned road of 1001 Kasbahs towards Tinghir oasis. The route will treat you to breathtaking views of fortified villages that once served as vital stops along the ancient caravan routes until the early 20th century. Upon reaching Tinghir, originally a military outpost during the French colonial period, you will veer off onto a lesser-traveled path leading to the oasis. Stroll alongside the stream, observing local farmers tending to their crops and herding their livestock. This leisurely walk culminates in a spectacular highlight of your tour: the Todgha Gorges. Following a relaxed lunch at a nearby café, your journey continues to Rissani, a town of great significance in Moroccan history. Rissani is known as the birthplace of the ruling Alaouite dynasty, with the founder laid to rest here. Moreover, the town holds historical importance as the starting point of ancient caravan routes that traversed the Sahara desert all the way to Timbuktu. In the afternoon, traverse rocky terrain en route to Merzouga, where a camel caravan awaits you. Delight in a camel ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes, witnessing a mesmerizing sunset before reaching your camp in the Sahara desert. As darkness falls, relish a dinner under the twinkling stars, serenaded by local nomads playing rhythmic drums throughout the night. Embrace the unique experience of spending the night at your Sahara desert camp.
Upon an early rising for a captivating sunrise camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes, the journey leads to the camp operator’s lodge in Merzouga for a refreshing breakfast and shower. Guests opting for the luxury camp will enjoy breakfast at the campsite, with showers conveniently available at their tents. Following this, the day unfolds with meeting the driver/guide for a picturesque drive towards Fes, passing through the breathtaking Ziz Valley via Errachidia, the capital of the Tafilalt region. The next stop is Midelt, where a leisurely lunch awaits, preceding a drive through the Middle Atlas Mountains adorned with Cedar Forests and Berber towns such as Imouzzar and Ifran, renowned as winter ski resorts for Moroccans. Keep an eye out as the driver may spot Barbary apes en route, offering a chance for memorable photos. The day concludes with an evening arrival in Fez, marking the end of the desert expedition as guests are dropped off at their hotel or riad.
